Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. Around 1500, Lisbon experienced a brilliant rise to become one of the most glamorous trading and port cities of the time. In 1755, a massive earthquake set the seal on the city’s economic decline. In the 19th century, Lisbon experienced a rebirth (Wikipedia). Today Lisbon is a cosmopolitan city. There is so much to see and do, so it is difficult to find enough time to look at everything you are interested in.

To-Do List

  • «Circuit touristique» by taking a hop-on hop-off tour to gain an overview about great things to see in a short time. While sitting in a hop-on hop-off bus, you get to hear historical and interesting information about all the attractions.
  • Time-out market: The market consists of two parts: a traditional market where you can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat. The other part is a modern food court with small restaurants and bars – like a small street food festival. Meanwhile, this has become fully touristy.
  • Take a ride with Elétrico 28 (Tram 28), the historic cable car that runs from Largo Martim Moniz in the city center along the many attractions in Lisbon. It dates back to the 1930s and exudes a fair amount of nostalgia. Note: This line is part of the public transportation network and is therefore not only used by tourists. So if you can’t find a seat, you can either wait, or just take a picture and then move on to the next attractions…

  • Eat as much Pastéis de Nata as you can. Some say that Pastéis de Belém are the best in Portugal.
  • Visit Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Ornaments and sailing motifs recall Portugal’s glory days as a trading power. The Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama is buried here.
  • Visit the cultural and creative center LxFactory. The LxFactory is a former industrial area where artists, hip restaurants and cafés have settled. In the old factory halls, you will find many fascinating stores.
  • Try Landeau chocolate at the LxFactory: The best chocolate cake in the world!
  • If you like beautiful gardens, you should visit Parque Eduardo VII de Inglaterra. It is the largest inner-city park in Lisbon.
  • In the heart of Lisbon is the Baixa district. Many small cafés can be found here.
  • Have a good time in Bairro Alto, the pub district. There are so-called tascas, traditional pubs where you can listen to fado music. In addition, there are a large number of traditional and modern bars and restaurants. With excellent food! There is always something going on.
