Mahé is the main island and largest island of the Seychelles. It is home almost 90% of the population of the Seychelles. The urban centre of the island is the capital Victoria.

In this post you find 8 recommendations of what you can do in Mahé.

  • Explore Mahé by car
Rental car cost around 45 euro per day (50 euro for automatic gear).
  • City sightseeing in the capital Victoria on Mahé
See Little Ben, London’s Big Ben’s little brother. Visit museums. Explore the Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market in Victoria: Buy food & souvenirs or just enjoy the beautiful colors. Soak up the atmosphere.
  • Visit the Takamaka Rum Distillery on Mahé and learn about how the make rum. In the end you can enjoy various rums at a tasting and of course you can buy some bottles to bring home from holidays as a gift.
  • Eat at Kafe Kreol at Anse Royale
Kafe Kreol is a place where you should eat at least once on Mahé. The food is really excellent! The service is great! And the view is beautiful. The restaurant is located directly at the sea. In the evening, there is also an opportunity for take-away, where you can take a pizza in a box for example to eat outside, somewhere at the beach or at home. But don’t leave the garbage and take it with you to dispose properly.
  • Go Snorkeling and see marine life upclose.
To be fair, snorkeling around St. Pierre, on La Digue or Praslin was much more fun than on Mahé, because the water was much clearer and there were more colourful fishes to see. On Mahé you can snorkel at Beau Vallon, Baie Lazare, Anse Soleil and Anse Royale.
  • Beau Vallon
Beau Vallon is the most famous beach on Mahé with some possibilities for water sports and food and therefore attracts many visitors. It is not overcrowded, but you will find more people than on the other beaches. If you are looking for tranquility, you are at the wrong place here. From noon until evening there are various stalls where food is cooked. Want something creole to eat? What about an octopus or fish curry, chicken with rice or a grilled fish? Of course there are also restaurants nearby.
  • Baie Lazare
Forming a beautiful half moon bay, just north of Anse Takamaka on Mahé, Baie Lazare is an about 2 km long sandy beach, divided in two by a few granite rocks right in the middle (seychelles.cc, 2019-05-03). It’s a beautiful sandy beach with turquoise clear water and shady palm trees. Parking opportunities are close. Little crowded. The water invites you to snorkeling. When you are lucky you may see some baby stingrays.
  • Look for the hidden pirate treasure of “La Buse”
It is believed that “La Buse” buried gold, silver and jewels in a cave on the Seychelles islands. And treasure hunters think that it could be found somewhere in Bel Ombre on Mahé. More information: http://www.seyheritage.sc/heritage-sites/bel-ombre-treasure-site
